How to use this dashboard
This dashboard visualises climate reanalysis data for Estonia, derived from the ECMWF ERA5 dataset on a 0.25° grid (~28 km). All maps are interactive — hover over any grid cell to see its exact value and coordinates, and use the Plotly toolbar to zoom, pan, or export the image.
Tabs at a glance
| Tab | What it shows |
|---|---|
| SWE | Snow Water Equivalent — side-by-side comparison of daily SWE fields from multiple reanalysis products (ERA5, CERRA, MetNo, CLMS). Pick two datasets and a date to compare how they represent the snowpack. |
| Heat | Thermal indices for agriculture: mean vegetation-period temperature, active temperature sum (> 10 °C), growing degree days (> 5 °C), and hot-day counts (> 25 °C). |
| Vegetation | Vegetation-period timing: start date (DOY), end date, and total length in days, defined by a 10-day rolling mean of daily temperature crossing the 5 °C threshold. |
| Moisture | Precipitation and moisture balance during the vegetation period: total precipitation, the Selyaninov Hydrothermal Coefficient (HTC), rain-day counts (≥ 5 mm), and intense-rain-day counts (≥ 20 mm). |
| Risk | Agroclimatic risk events: last spring frost date, number of drought periods (≥ 10 consecutive dry days), and excess-moisture periods (prolonged high HTC). |
| Winter | Winter severity (Oct–Apr): frost degree days (accumulated cold below 0 °C) and severe frost day counts (Tmin < −10 °C). |
| T2M Decadal | Decadal (10-day) climatology of 2 m air temperature. Browse month by month and decade by decade, view absolute values for either climate period, or their difference. |
| Soil | ERA5 soil variables at four depths (0–7, 7–28, 28–100, 100–289 cm): soil temperature (STL1–4, °C) and volumetric soil water (SWVL1–4, m³/m³). Available at decadal (10-day) and daily (day-of-year) resolution for the two 30-year climatology periods, with a difference view. Also includes the static soil type (SLT) map. |
Controls on climate-index tabs (Heat – Winter)
Each of the five climate-index tabs shares the same set of controls:
- Index
- Choose which climate index to display. The algorithm definition updates below the map.
- Period
- Select a 30-year climatological period — 1961–1990 or 1991–2020 — or Difference to see how the index changed between the two periods (1991–2020 minus 1961–1990).
- Statistic
- Each index is summarised over 30 years with multiple statistics: Mean, Median, Std Dev, Trend (linear slope), CV (coefficient of variation, %), and percentiles (5th, 10th, 90th, 95th). Switching the statistic or period automatically adjusts the colour-scale range.
- Min / Max sliders
- Fine-tune the colour-scale limits. They auto-adjust to the data range whenever you change the index, period, or statistic, but you can drag them manually to highlight specific value ranges.
Data source
All climate indices are computed from ERA5 reanalysis (ECMWF, Copernicus Climate Change Service) at 0.25° spatial resolution. SWE comparisons additionally include CERRA, MetNo, and CLMS products. The T2M decadal tab uses ERA5 2 m temperature aggregated into 10-day periods.
